Busy times: a month of celebration

Busy Times

On this date some years ago Sharon Osbourne, TV host and wife of Ozzy of Black Sabbath, was born. Less known is the fact that another baby girl came into this world at virtually the same time and this one, fortunately, decided to spend her adult life with me.

We will have fine wine in our home tonight. Then there is the sailing next week and then off to our annual attendance of the New York Wine Experience on the 20th. It will be a month of celebration, enjoyment and learning.

I feel sure that you will understand if I write again of “the sailors’ wines” that we featured back on March 3.

They are from Dry Creek Vineyard in Sonoma and as they have sponsored many sailing events, even one of the America’s Cup teams in San Francisco, they show their love of this sport by featuring sailing yachts on all their labels.

I just cannot imagine anyone that would not really enjoy our 2014 Dry Creek Vineyard chenin blanc from the Clarksburg appellation and here is what the winemaker has to say: “This beautiful wine is wonderfully consistent vintage after vintage. We receive superior chenin blanc fruit from the Wilson Ranch in Clarksburg, allowing us to produce an expressive, nuanced and delicious wine. At first swirl, aromatics of white peach, cantaloupe, melon and lavender spring forward from the glass. On the palate, the wine is refreshing with great acidity and mouth-feel feeling light on its feet and dancing across the palate with juicy tropical fruit notes and minerally undertones. One hundred per cent stainless steel fermentation guarantees the fresh fruit character fans of this wine have come to appreciate over the years.” At $15.85 it is such a bargain.

The March article referred to 2013 chenin blanc and also 2013 sauvignon blanc, but both have now moved on to the 2014. The 2013 sauvignon blanc won gold, and rated 90/100, but the 2014 has just been awarded a quite incredible 95/100 by winere viewonline.com.

They write: “The wines are consistently good and have been for decades, yet there is something beyond the ordinary going on with this latest release of its sauvignon blanc.

“The 2014 is simply brilliant, perhaps the finest sauvignon I’ve tasted from this sauvignon specialist. This one is crafted in the style of a bordeaux blanc, with gorgeous notes of white peach and melon, a hint of tropical and an inviting spice and floral nose that keeps on giving. A bordeaux blanc this good could cost from $40 to $100.”

The Dry Creek sauvignon blanc is 82 per cent sauvignon blanc, 14 per cent sauvignon musque and the rest is sauvignon gris that they have used for the first time. $18.85.

I would be handling the truth rather loosely if I were to say that I am not somewhat amazed by the amount of Dry Creek Heritage Vines zinfandel we are selling.

In a way I can understand this as it is just so delightfully delicious and I love it.

The 2013 version consists of 76 per cent zinfandel, 21 per cent petite sirah, two per cent primitivo and one per cent carignane that are all aged in American, French and Hungarian oak.

Wine Spectator rated it 90/100 and called it a “smart buy”. It was “editor’s choice” with Wine Enthusiast, who also gave it 90/100. This zinfandel is so beautifully balanced and the price is $21.90.

The top wine that we carry from Dry Creek is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, petit verdot and cabernet franc that they call The Mariner.

This 2012 vintage was the wine that we enjoyed at dinner with owner David Stare in the Sonoma town of Healdsburg last spring. It bought back memories of the 1980s when I was first introduced to his wines and it was an indication that over the years the wines of Dry Creek Vineyard have gotten even better. The Mariner sells for $46.75.
