Johnson defends Rubis crown

Night of finals: Winners of the Rubis Division Squash tournament last night. Left to right: Dianna Armstrong (Rubis representative), Christine Barnes (Division E winner), Ben Bramlett (Division B winner), Kristen Johnson (Division A), Jacques Deverteuil (Division C), Meagan Jackson (Division D) and Dylan Pratt (Junior boys). Charlotte Toogood won the junior girls title.

Kristen Johnson and Ben Bramlett won the A and B divisions during a night of finals at the Rubis Divisional Squash Tournament.

Johnson, the Court House professional, beat Robbie Maycock 11-5, 11-9, 11-5 to successfully defend his A title at Bermuda Squash Racquets Association.

Maycock, who has just returned to the Island after three years abroad in school in the United States, put up a good fight in the second game after fighting back to 7-7 before Johnson won 11-9.

“It was three tough games,” Johnson said. “He [Maycock] is very tall so he covers the court and it is sometimes difficult to get around him.

“The first game he made a lot of mistakes, but in the second game he was a bit more consistent with his shots.

“That second game was important, and if he had won that we would probably still be out there for another 30 minutes. The third game I slowed it down a bit more and was in control. It’s been a good week, a good tournament.”

Maycock admitted he was beaten by a more experienced opponent.

“Full credit to Kristen, a quality player,” Maycock said. “He worked for it and when I was in control I was really moving him well, but all credit to his movement.

“It’s wonderful to be back home full time, this is my home club, I grew up here.”

Bramlett took the B title after coming from behind to beat veteran Bill Dickinson 4-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-6.

“The first game Bill was making winners and I wasn’t getting into my rhythm,” Bramlett, who is 23-years-old, said.

“The next games I won 11-6, 11-6, 11-6 and just kept pushing through and getting a gap between me and Bill.”

Dickinson said: I’ve played Ben a couple of times and he’s getting better and stronger and it was well deserved, though I didn’t play that bad.

“I won the first game, but then he got a bit faster and I got a bit tired. He’s got me by 30 years, for sure.”

Jacques Deverteuil beat Edwin Wickham in the C final 11-7, 11-8, 11-6 while Meagan Jackson won the D final over Tom Gridley and Christine Barnes the E final over Matthew Ringer. Charlotte Toogood and Dylan Pratt were the junior winners.
