Island’s triathletes impress in Miami
Bermuda’s large contingent produced some impressive performances at the Miami 70.3 Ironman yesterday.
Neil Lupsic was the Island’s quickest finisher, coming home in a time of 4hr 38min, after completing the 1.2-mile swim in 33:59, the 56-mile bike ride in 2:24:39, and the 13.1-mile run in 1:35:52.
Lupsic’s time was good enough to see him finish twelfth in the 35-39 age group.
There were plenty of good finishes among the 21-strong group, with Claire de Ste Croix one of several who grabbed spots in the top ten of their respective divisions.
De Ste Croix was fourth in her 50-54 group with a time of 5:28:30, while Kristen Palmer placed fifth in the 25-29 age group with a time of 5:08:17, finishing the swim in 32:13, the bike in 2:43:44, and the half-marathon in 1:47:52.
Carolyn Conway and Steve Petty both finished sixth in their respective divisions, with Conway posting a 6:36:11, and Petty a 6:18:04. Steve Nash was eighth in the 55-59 group with his time of 6:40:12, as was Marie-Lyne Dore, who competed in the 30-34 category and finished in 5:19:11.
Cora Lee Starzomski was the only other Bermuda triathlete to manage a top ten spot, finishing eighth in her 40-44 age group in a time of 5:31:33. Starzomski had one of the quickest swims of the Bermuda group, covering the distance in 28:26.
Other performances included: Allison Schindel, who was eleventh in the 30-34 age group in a time of 5:27:16; Belinda Castree 5:59:38; Frances Betts 6:10:07; Sharon Hammond 5:54:13; Alec Shepherd 5:14:45; Rebecca Shepherd 5:54:16; Liz Stewart 6:54:46; Clive Langley 5:30:16; Ian Morrison 6:26:03; David Soutter 5:36:57; Karl Wilson 4:54:21; Melissa Logie 5:43:36 and Steve Smith 5:24:08.
In all 23 Bermuda athletes started the Ironman, with Ashley Estwanik and Philip Mace both forced to drop out injured part way through.
