Desperate to blame mistake on the OBA

PLP MP Lovitta Foggo (File photograph)

Dear Sir,

I hear members of the Progressive Labour Party are pretty depressed about the successes the Government has been having of late: hotel in St George’s, unemployment down, America’s Cup sailing, etc, etc.

They’re desperate for some kind of propaganda win, and if you wanted to see proof of that, read Lovita Foggo’s press release and David Burt’s Facebook post about questions in the House of Assembly.

In the Speaker’s absence, the Clerk to the House mistakenly sent out a memorandum to parliamentarians saying that because of staffing problems, the House wasn’t going to allow questions to be asked until further notice.

It was nothing more than a mistake, and it got sorted out pretty quickly.

But Ms Foggo was desperate to blame it on the OBA.

“The OBA’s austerity measures are now impeding parliamentary business,” she said. “This can and will have grave ramifications in doing the people’s work.”

Mr Burt said it was “the death of democracy in Bermuda”, and likened us to North Korea.

Come on. That’s just ridiculous.

The way you need to look at it, Opposition people, is that the repair of the economy is going so well that there’s a shortage of people to apply to join the staff of the Legislature.

OK, that’s a little bit of a stretch, but at least it isn’t a fairytale.
