Thanks to those who donate time and treasure

Philanthropy does not just happen. The No 1 reason that people give to a cause is because they are asked. Sure, there are other very compelling reasons, among them passion for a particular project, a religious or moral obligation and even societal guilt.

However, in most cases, a person or company does not decide to give to a non-profit without a request first being presented. On National Philanthropy Day, we recognise all those people who said yes when asked to support a cause. We thank those who donated of their time, talent and treasure to support organisations that are providing a societal need, whether it be related to health, the environment, the arts, education, or any number or worthy causes.

We are lucky in Bermuda. We have a long history of philanthropy and it is something we instil at a very early age through bake sales, car washes and other fundraising events that occur every weekend in multiple locations, and in the community service hours and projects required in schools.

The role of a fundraiser is to connect donors with causes; to provide an opportunity for someone to make an impact in their community; to make a gift they will be proud of, to an organisation for which they care. Philanthropy requires knowledge, confidence and the ability to bring hearts, minds and resources together for the greater good.

Fundraisers fill this crucial role in philanthropy, but they do so much more than that. Fundraisers work tirelessly to support their organisations, to ensure that vitally needed funds are sourced and stewarded, efficiently and ethically, so that the programmes and services — the heart of the organisation — can thrive.

On National Philanthropy Day, we salute those who give financial support, volunteer their time, and use their skills to better our community. We also recognise and wish to thank all those who work in the philanthropic community in Bermuda. Together we will make an impact and be a catalyst for change in our community.
