Vessel in plea for help as senior falls ill

Distress call: the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre (File photograph)

A local sailing vessel requested emergency assistance this afternoon after an elderly gentlemen on board suffered a suspected heart attack.

The vessel, located on North Shore off Ferry Reach in St George’s, contacted Bermuda Radio at about 1.15pm, requesting a place to dock and an ambulance, said a spokesman for the Department of Marine and Ports Services.

He said the crew believed the 70-year-old man was experiencing a heart attack and a doctor on board was able to administer CPR.

The Fisheries patrol boat Protector also heard the call and escorted the sailing vessel to the public dock at Grotto Bay, where an ambulance was waiting.
