Mediation training to help family fallouts

Justice Norma Wade-Miller

A family mediation training initiative is set to launch on Monday, aimed at resolving familial disputes without unnecessary litigation.

The Judicial Training Institute of Bermuda event will teach mediators to focus on ‘alternative dispute resolution’, a feature of the newly-created Integrated Family Court.

This is designed to allow litigants to settle their problems through mutual agreement - thereby improving family relations, promoting compliance and saving resources.

Governor George Fergusson will preside at Monday’s launch, which will see mediation experts from Canada conducting training.

This will include conflict analysis, dispute resolution process, psychological effects of separation and child support.

Justice Norma Wade-Miller, Puisne Judge and chairwoman of the Family Law Reform Sub-Committee, said: “Mediation is the centrepiece of the new Integrated Family Court.

“We look forward to welcoming the individuals who have chosen to be a part of this very important initiative.”
