Garden event at historic Norwood

Historic property: Norwood on Pitts Bay Road

Celebrate the start of the Christmas season and marvel at Bermuda’s rich history tomorrow.

From 10am to 3pm, The Garden Club of Bermuda is hosting a fundraising open house and garden event at Norwood, an 18th century carriage house located at 34 Pitts Bay Road.

Historian Peter Frith will dress in a St George’s town crier’s outfit to greet visitors, while Michael Dunkley, the Premier, will launch the day’s proceedings at 10am.

The property was named after mathematician Richard Norwood, who surveyed Bermuda in 1617 after arriving from Britain.

It was built somewhere between 1711 and 1722 by sea captain Samuel Saltus and boasts antiques and art from the likes of Spanish sculptor Eduardo Urculo.

The mansion is now owned by lawyer Sarah Tafur and her husband Daniel Tafur, who work in investment management. They bought Norwood in 2005 and live there with daughters Natalia and Alejandra.

Elsewhere, on the day, children can create their own Christmas box and decorations, and they may even get to meet Santa himself. At 11am and 1pm, a Garden Club member will take guests around Norwood, which boasts four acres of land sloping down to the sea. A plant sale will offer all manner of specimens — from roses to lavender to begonias — as well as a bake sale and a raffle at 2pm.

And Barry Brewer will also give an hourlong talk at midday about his restoration of the century-old cedar boar Larkspur, which will be docked in Soncy Bay. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $10 for students aged 10 to 18 and free for children under 10.

All proceeds will benefit community projects and the recipients of The Garden Club of Bermuda’s scholarship programme.

“We like to go the extra mile,” said Sylvie Elliott, publicity officer for The Garden Club of Bermuda. “We hope to attract as many people as possible to support our good causes.”
