Wagner can take us to next level, says Wells

Optimistic for future: Wells believes Wagner can help him rediscover his scoring touch

Nahki Wells believes the football philosophy of David Wagner, the new Huddersfield Town manager, can help reignite his goalscoring form and transform the struggling team’s fortunes.

The 25-year-old believes he is well-suited to Wagner’s style of football and hopes the appointment of the former Borussia Dortmund II coach will serve as a catalyst to take his game to the next level.

“I’m quite confident that [Wagner] is the man to get the best out of me and take this team to another level,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“Hopefully he can kick me onto another level. I think his qualities, and how he wants the game to be played, will suit me and get the best out of me.”

Wagner, who won the Uefa Cup as a striker with Schalke, became the first foreigner to manage Huddersfield after the sacking of Chris Powell this month.

“Being a foreign manager his philosophy and training methods are completely different,” Wells said. “He brings a completely different vibe and it’s hard work. We’re all optimistic and quite excited about the future.

“He has come in and changed the whole dynamic of the club. He has put players in positions they didn’t think they could play.

“It’s a new challenge and everyone is excited and looking forward to it.”

Wells and his team-mates experienced the strong work ethic that Wagner expects from his players during a training camp in Spain last week.

“One thing I can say is you have to be fit to play in his team,” said Wells, who has scored four goals this season. “You have to be able to run and be able to play football and that excites me.

“It was a tough week with double sessions every day and no leisure time. He’s strict and tough, but every session was enjoyable and different.

“It was almost like a pre-season camp where he reiterated what he wants us to do and improved our fitness levels to where he wants them to be.”

Wagner’s first two weeks in charge have gone smoothly thanks to the players’ willingness to adopt his methods.

“I’m very happy with the players I have,” Wagner said. “They are making things very easy for us.

“The players have been very open to all the information they have got and they have made the first steps in their heads and on the pitch. You can see they are welcoming and are accepting what we are bringing in.

“They are very good characters that like to work and try to bring onto the pitch what we show them in the videos. Everyone likes to work in this new way.”

The 44-year-old, who made eight appearances for the United States, will take charge of his first Huddersfield game in tomorrow’s Yorkshire derby away to Sheffield Wednesday.

Huddersfield are nineteenth in the table, just two points above the relegation zone.

Also in action at the weekend will be Rai Simons’s Chesterfield United away to Port Vale, while Reggie Lambe’s Mansfield Town are at home to Hartlepool.
