Symonds gives Colts a fitness boost

Fitness battle: Symonds, right, the Colts captain

Lozendro Symonds, the Devonshire Colts captain, could be available for his team’s Premier Division match against Boulevard at Police Field on Sunday.

Symonds, Colts’s leading goalscorer, was substituted at half-time after suffering a mild hamstring strain in his side’s 2-1 home win over PHC Zebras at the weekend.

“Lozendro had a twinge and it was more a precaution instead of him pulling it and then he can’t go next week,” Gerald Bean, the Colts coach, said.

There is a possibility of Symonds making a speedy return to the line-up, but the same perhaps cannot be said for Joseph Butterfield, the Colts centre back.

Butterfield also injured his hamstring during against PHC and was replaced at the interval.

The extent of his injury is far more severe than Symonds’s and there is a strong probability that he will miss his team’s match against Boulevard, who share the same home venue with Colts.

“Joseph had the full hamstring pull,” Bean added.

The pair will undergo treatment and an assessment this week.

“We will get them on the treatment table and see how quickly they come back,” Bean said. “We will make an assessment by Saturday and hopefully we will be as strong as we were today [Sunday].”

Losing Symonds and Butterfield was the last thing Colts needed with several players already sidelined through injuries.

“This victory is hard because we have got a quite a few injuries already,” Bean added. “We are the walking wounded right now and so the injuries are a major concern.”

Colts closed the gap on second-place Robin Hood with their triumph over PHC, with a penalty from Ryan Purnell and a Kyle Jones strike.

“We were the walking wounded but our players showed pure character and heart,” Bean said. “They handled themselves well and gave everything they’ve got.”

n St David’s and Wolves face each other in their FA Cup, preliminary round replay tonight at Devonshire Recreation Club.

The winners will go through to the draw for the first round, which will take place at Bermuda Football Association headquarters in Prospect on Friday.
