Wine Enthusiast magazine recently wrote: “Unfortunately only available in Bermuda, this wonderful bottling shows salted brambleberries, crushed violets, asphalt, rosemary and pinpointed florality on the fresh, yet concentrated nose. The palate is zesty and darkly focused, with elderberries, stewed plums, thyme and Earl Grey tea.”

They rated it a quite rare 94/100. Of course, we are among the fortunate few that can enjoy the Wild Hogge 2011 Pinot Noir.

Wild Hogge wines are a project developed by Huw and Dale Morris when they left Bermuda and settled in Paso Robles which, I would think, is the fastest growing fine wine area in California.

I remember well the day that my wife and I met with Huw and tasted a barrel sample of their very first wine, a cabernet sauvignon that went on to win a gold medal; very impressive for a first bottling.

As you might imagine, this is a very small operation and only 209 cases of their 2011 pinot noir were produced and we sell this wine for $36.80. Its burgundy style would marry well with a Christmas bird and the Winslow Homer label of wild hogs on our South Shore and the foil top that is a reproduction of our hog penny, all make for a perfect Bermudian gift.

Wild Hogge 2010 MoonGate was handled in this way by December’s Wine Enthusiast: “92/100 it’s too bad that this blend of 75 per cent zinfandel, 12 per cent cabernet franc and 13 per cent syrah is only found in Bermuda. Elderberry, tobacco and blueberry-stuffed chocolate power the dense nose, yet the palate shows a fresh lightness, with mint and menthol lifting the cherry juice and tannic grip that structures the sip.”

I would not hesitate to have this with a rack of lamb or a roast beef. $39.95. One hundred and sixty-eight cases were produced for us.

The other unique wines that we stock from Wild Hogge are their Tree Frog 2007, which is a blend of syrah and cabernet sauvignon that sells for $42.15; also we have Wild Hogge Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 for $42.45. Our soils and climate do not lend themselves at all for the growing of complex grapes so it is quite wonderful to be able to show off our Island home with this lovely collection from the Morris family.

I am really not sure if I should share the following information as it could well result in a sell-out of a quite remarkable wine. The same December issue of the Wine Enthusiast magazine has also featured their Top 100 Wines and these have been selected from over 19,000 that were reviewed this year. There is only one chance in 190 that a wine might be included on this exalted list at all, and of course to be first overall is one of the greatest honours that any wine can have bestowed on it. We have in stock the first placed wine overall!

Two years ago I was invited to attend a seminar in Las Vegas where the San Felice winery in Tuscany introduced us all to a new level of wine called Gran Selezione (I know, I have a tough job) and it has since proved to be very popular here. The full name of the one that we presently have is San Felice Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Grigio 2011 and this is the wine that has been called the best wine in the world for 2015. We sell it for $38.25 and so you might ask, what about bottles that cost hundreds, or even thousands of dollars?

The fact is that this list is based on a combination of quality, availability and price. If mere mortals cannot find or afford it then it will probably not make the grade. Here is what Wine Enthusiast said: “A fantastic combination of power and finesse, this opens with aromas of underbrush, ripe plum, truffle, leather, smoke and a balsamic note. The firm, delicious palate delivers fresh black cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon and mocha. Velvet tannins support the juicy flavours. 95/100.”
