A demonstration of race walking will take place at next Friday’s KPMG Bermuda Invitational Mile, with a view to the sport becoming a more regular feature at local running events.

Four junior athletes from the United States, Anthony Peters, Mike Mannozzi, Katharine Newhoff and Molly Josephs, will participate in the demonstration which will take place just before the adult women’s mile.

They will arrive in Bermuda with Jeff Salvage, a foremost authority on race walking, who will conduct a clinic next Saturday for junior and senior participants at Bermuda College.

“This is something we in the Bermuda National Athletics Association are excited about, it will formalise and introduce to Bermuda for the first time race walking in its purest form,” said Brenton Roberts, chairman of Race Walking Bermuda, during a press conference at the BNAA office yesterday.

“Last year we had an instructor come down and teach race walking during a three-day seminar at the Bermuda College, and this year he [Salvage] will be returning with four national race walkers and they will be on display on the Friday night.”

Josephs is from San Diego and is the 2015 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics indoor and outdoor national champion over the 3K and 5K races.

Peters attends St Ambrose University in Illinois and has represented the US in race walking in countries such as China, Canada, Chile and Guatemala.

Mannozzi is a four-times US-team member, including the 2011 Pan Am Games, 2014 World Cup and the Pan Am Cup in 2013 and 2015.

Newhoff has a best time of 7min 83sec for the mile. The world record for the mile is 5:38.

Jeff Salvage, who will present the clinic, was the US Track and Field Association junior national race walking coordinator from 1997 to 2000 and is a national champion.

The race walking group, with Sinclair Smith as the driving force, have been teaching race walking in local schools.

To register for the clinic visit racedayworld.com or pick up registration forms from the BNAA office. The fee is $5 for adults and $2 for children.

The morning clinic for adults runs from 8.30am to 12.30pm, with the afternoon clinc for juniors starting at 1.30pm.
