Team Oni adds drones to gadget range

Gadget gurus: Jamie Lovell, left, and business partner Alex Marshall giving a presentation during Global Entrepreneurship Week last year

Two young businessmen have teamed up to bring hi-tech gadgets like electric scooters and motorbikes to Bermuda.

Alex Marshall and Jamie Lovell joined forces to import and sell a range of products either not available on the Island or at cheaper prices.

Mr Marshall, 30, said the oniracingclub.com website is an extension of Mr Lovell’s existing specialist car parts and customising company.

He explained: “Jamie was the founder and I joined to help out. He was previously providing for car enthusiasts who wanted to upgrade their cars with body parts, that kind of thing.”

Now the Team Oni Racing Club (Torc) site has expanded to include other products at the cutting edge of technology like radio-controlled aircraft and drones, as well as bikes, including a 50cc tricycle scooter.

Mr Marshall said: “We offer things like new innovative radio-controlled jets, hoverboards, jet skis and jet surfboards.

“It’s things you can’t get in Bermuda and at prices including shipping, duty paid and delivery.

“We also have electric motorcycles that we don’t have in Bermuda yet.”

Mr Marshall added: “Bikes were the first thing we wanted to provide — both electric bikes and conventional bikes at a better price.”

The revamped website launched at the weekend — and Mr Marshall said it had already attracted a significant amount of traffic.

The site features hi-tech gadgets like water-powered jet packs, jet hoverboards, jet skis and a five-seat jet boat, as well as electric hoverboards and skateboards and bluetooth electric scooters.

Mr Marshall said: “It’s exciting stuff and we’ve got more big things coming, but this is something new for the new year.

“Optimising new innovations is the slogan we go by. There’s lots of cool, cutting-edge stuff. For example, a good professional drone is $1,500 — we can bring one to Bermuda for $900.

“But I think the strongest thing will be the electric bikes, especially with gas prices and everybody wanting to be energy-efficient.

“The option of having electric bikes which offer a nice range is good. We also have three-wheel bikes, which nobody else has. And the things that people can get here already are usually much higher in price.”

Mr Marshall said that he and Mr Lovell, who also manages Snorkel Park at Dockyard, also planned a series of events to publicise the business over this year.

He added: “We are going to have an extreme sports tournament later in the year utilising some of the products we sell — it’s about tapping into a market which hasn’t really been filled yet.

“We’re two best friends and we thought we could attack this market.

“We believe it’s a great marketing area to target — that’s the fun thing about Bermuda. There are a lot of niche markets that aren’t being catered to.”
