Marshall reaches recovery milestone

Return to racing: Larry Marshall

Larry Marshall will achieve another milestone in his recovery from a long bout with injury during this year’s Bermuda Marathon Weekend.

The 32-year-old distance runner is making his first appearance in today’s 10K race in a decade and is pumped up for the big occasion.

“I haven’t raced it in a long time but for me it’s always been an exciting race,” Marshall said. “I am from the area [Devonshire] and so I know the route like the back of my hand.

“I get to go across from the Middle Road side and North Shore side across my gate where my family and fans come down, and I always like to put in a good showing.

“It’s one of the things that I like to do as far as the support and I just hope the wind is not high coming off North Shore.”

Today will also mark the first time that Marshall and his brother Lamont have competed together in the event since 2006.

“I am nowhere near where he is right now,” Marshall said. “He is at a different level and I don’t expect to be competing with him because if I do then he will have had a horrible race and I hope I don’t really.

“We really don’t think about it as much when we are competing in the same race and I think the family probably enjoys it a little more.”

The past Bermuda Day Half Marathon champion made a comeback to the sport last year after multiple “niggling injuries” threatened to end his career.

“It was definitely a frustrating time and at one point I began to hate the sport because I was trying everything to get back and just couldn’t,” he said.

Through coaching others Marshall regained his passion for the sport and after “tweaking” his technique, training methods and philosophy he eventually resumed running competitively.

“At first I started coaching kids and then a group of adults and I think that brought the love back for it and I’m grateful for that because I was then able to get myself back into shape,” Marshall said.

Marshall has set himself a target for today’s 10K which he is keeping to himself.

“I’m not too concerned about that because I know I am not where I plan on being later on in the year.

“I think next year when I get a lot of the kinks out I can really start attacking some of my personal bests.

“I haven’t raced a hard 10K in years, and so I just want see how the body can recover.”
