Best backs ‘mystery pair’ to impress

One to watch: Parfitt-Williams was recommended to West Ham by Best as a 14-year-old

Two more Bermuda footballers are on the radar of West Ham United, the Barclays Premier League club, after being recommended by Clyde Best.

Best, the former West Ham striker, has revealed the East London club have shown an interest in running the rule over a promising pair of local players this summer.

The 64-year-old, who would not reveal their names at this stage, said the players possess enormous potential and feels good about their chances of being recruited by his former club.

“I won’t disclose their names at this time, but they are very good players and I don’t recommend any players to West Ham that I think are not going to make it,” Best said.

“Everybody I recommend are people I know will go with the right attitude to make it.

“I’d rather our guys go in the summer because it’s better for them rather than going this time of the year when it’s cold.

“At least going in the summer time gives them time to acclimatise.”

Best is part of the club’s international scouting programme and was instrumental in securing trials for forward Djair Parfitt-Williams, who played two first-team games in the Europa League qualifiers last July, and was an unused substitute away to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

Parfitt-Williams, 19, has played a key role for West Ham’s development team this season and scored in last night’s 2-1 home win over Blackburn Rovers in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League Cup quarter-final. It was his fifth goal in four games.

Considered one of West Ham’s most exciting talents, he signed a two-year deal at the club after finishing as the top scorer for their under-18 side with nine goals last season.

He was playing for the San Jose Earthquakes academy when he was recommended to West Ham by Best.

“I deal directly with the club and if I see any talent and think they can make it then I bring it to them,” said Best, who scored 58 goals in 218 appearances for West Ham in the 1970s. “That’s what I do and I try and help the children out.

“We have a lot of talent here which just needs to be harnessed in the right way. We need to get together and give these children opportunities. There’s a lot of children here who, if given the opportunity, can make it. But you must have the right attitude also.”

Last week West Ham signed Nathan Trott, a former BAA Wanderers and Bermuda Under-15 goalkeeper, on a two-year deal. Best said the more Bermudian players in the professional game the better it will be for the national team.

“I think it’s great whenever I see our guys playing overseas,” Best said. “The more players we get overseas the better it’s going to be for our national team.

“The Bermuda team would greatly improve if we can get 11 players playing in different parts of the world where I know they are going to get good coaching.

“You have guys like Nahki Wells [Huddersfield Town], Nathan and Djair at West Ham and others like Reggie Lambe [Mansfield Town] and Rai Simons [Chesterfield] who are playing in a professional environment, so when they do come back home they will only make our national team stronger.”

n The Bermuda School Sports Federation All-Star matches will be held over two days at the National Sports Centre next week after last Saturday’s games were postponed because of bad weather.

The matches will be held next Tuesday and Friday so not to conflict with the Bermuda Football Association’s youth leagues on Saturdays.

The East v West middle school girls and primary school boys matches will be held next Tuesday at 4pm at North Field, while next Friday, at the National Stadium, the middle school boys match will be at 4.30pm, with senior school girls and boys games to be held at 6pm and 7.30pm.
