Somerset Eagles and Flanagan’s Onion opened a five-point cushion at the top of the First Division yesterday when Eagles handed third-placed St George’s a 3-0 loss at Wellington Oval.

Eagles, who lost at home to St George’s 4-1 in the first meeting this season, avenged that defeat and dealt a huge blow to the promotion hopes of the East Enders as the loss dropped them three places down to sixth.

Eagles led 1-0 at the half after Keemo Harrison scored after six minutes.

The visiting side doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Nathan Rego, their top scorer, scored with a far-post header after a cross from the right.

Eagles were reduced to ten men when Whakail Tucker was second off in the 55th minute for a foul which brought him a second booking.

St George’s immediately seized upon the one-man advantage as Jarreau Hayward had a header parried by the goalkeeper. However it was Eagles who scored again in the 59th minute when Rego and Rushaun Seaman exchanged passes as they penetrated the St George’s defence before Seaman drove his effort past goalkeeper Charles Marshall from seven yards.

Rego twice went close to adding to his tally when he lifted a shot just over the bar after a quick break out of defence by Eagles.

Then a free kick behind the St George’s defence fell into the path of Rego before his shot was pushed against the upright by Marshall.

“We knew it was an important game for us and we didn’t want to lose any points today,” Roger Lee, the Eagles coach, said.

“I thought my players applied themselves well from the beginning of the game and we were up 1-0 early and able to maintain that to the half.

“The third goal relieved a lot of the pressure and we were able to play it out to the end.”

Second-place Onions enjoyed a 4-2 victory over Wolves at Goose Gosling Field to stay on the same points as Eagles, who lead on goal difference.

Miles Brewer scored twice for Onions, while Michael Bailey and Bron Turner also found the net.

Young Men’s Social Club, St David’s and BAA Wanderers all moved ahead of St George’s after big wins.

Social Club had the biggest win of the season in the First Division when they thrashed Ireland Island Rangers 9-1 at PHC Field.

Saki Tuzo and Robert Rawlings led the charge with a brace apiece while Clay Darrell, Cory Burgess, Jaire Fough-Smith, Eugene Ball and Raymond Burgess also got in on the scoring act as the home side had things all their own way against the visiting side who replied through Jahnai Ratteray.

Tuzo opened the scoring in the eleventh minute. However, the home side’s lead was short-lived as Ratteray equalised for Ireland Rangers a minute later.

Social Club regained the lead through Darrell in the 20th minute and pulled further ahead through Tuzo and two strikes from Rawlings inside of four minutes to take a commanding 5-1 lead at the half.

The home side picked up where they left off after the break and put the game further beyond Ireland Rangers’ reach with four unanswered goals.

Burgess made it 6-1 in the 53rd before Fough-Smith extended the home side’s lead in the 75th minute two minutes after Ireland Rangers had Jared Hayward sent off for a second booking.

Ball added his name onto the scoresheet in the 80th minute before Burgess rounded off the scoring nine minutes later.

St David’s beat X-Roads 5-2 at Lord’s with four goals in the last 20 minutes after X-Roads led 2-1 early in the second half. Kontaif Burton opened the scoring for the home team in the 35th minute before Khomeini Talbot equalised in the 45th minute.

Daniel Baker then netted in the first minute of the second half to put X-Roads ahead, a lead they held until the 70th minute when St David’s hit back with a vengeance.

Burton netted his second to make it 2-2 before Otis Minors scored the third in the 80th minute. Allan Douglas then closed out the scoring with two goals in the 81st and 90th minutes.

On Saturday night, BAA Wanderers beat Paget Lions 5-1 at Somerset with Malachi Jones scoring a hat-trick.

BAA had the best possible start when Jones netted in the fourth and twelfth minutes, the second from the penalty spot.

Koshun Durrant pulled one back for Paget from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute. He was later sent off in the 41st minute for violent conduct, receiving a straight red card, as Paget were forced to play the second half with ten men.

Jones capitalised, completing his hat-trick in the first minute of the second half before Gerald Simons scored an own goal in the 75th minute to make it 4-1. Jahkari Furbert closed out the scoring in the 90th minute.
