The West retained their Primary Boys’ title after beating the East 5-4 on penalties at the North Field, the National Sports Centre, yesterday.

The penalties were just as close as the match with nine of the ten converted as Adio Tankard-DeShield and Aquiyei Richardson, both of West Pembroke, scored their efforts along with Kwame Naylor of Warwick Academy, Kairo Lewis, of Paget Primary, and Stephan Jones of Somerset Primary.

Jekei Eve, of Harrington Primary, and Aunde Todd, of St George’s Prep, converted the first two East kicks before Amir Dill, of Elliott Primary, smashed his shot against the crossbar.

Ty Dunlop and Michael Costello, of Somersfield, converted the East’s final two penalties in a losing cause. The West had the better of the first-half chances with Nik Kempe, the East goalkeeper, making a good save to deny Stephan Jones.

The East looked the more likely to score in the second half as Aaron Estravit’s cross from the left went untouched across goal soon after the restart.

Dunlop was a main threat for the East as he headed wide of the post. Dunlop then hit the post with a left-footed shot before volleying past the far post late in the match.

The West MVP was goalkeeper Holder from West Pembroke, while Eve was MVP for the East.

In the Primary School Girls’ All-Star match, the West defeated the East thanks to a hat-trick from Katelyn Medeiros of BHS.

Medeiros scored two superb goals from distance in the eighth and 23rd minutes before the East fought back through goals from twins Jahni and Jahdi Simons, both of Elliot Primary, on 33 and 39 minutes.

Medeiros grabbed her hat-trick in the 42nd minute before Azari Easton, of West Pembroke, completed the scoring in the 70th minute. Isabella Roe was the East MVP.

Wendell Smith, the coach of the West, hailed his team’s performance and singled out match-winner Madeiros for special praise.

“Katelyn scored some fantastic goals and is one of the best young female players I have seen for some time,” said the West Pembroke Primary teacher.

“It was a really entertaining game and we had some great support from the parents which was fantastic.

“I believe girls football in Bermuda has a very bright future.”
