Wells scores in Huddersfield defeat

Several chances: Wells scored in Huddersfield's defeat at Preston

Nahki Wells struck his twelfth goal of the season in Huddersfield Town’s 2-1 defeat away to Preston North End in the Sky Bet Championship today.

The Bermuda striker broke the deadlock in the 80th minute after slipping the ball past the onrushing Anders Lindegaard, the Preston goalkeeper.

But the home side fought back with an own goal by defender Joell Lynch to level the scores before Alan Browne headed home a Calum Woods cross in added time.

Wells, who had a 20-yard effort fly inches wide at 1-1, was denied several times by Lindegaard to leave Huddersfield without a win in five games.

David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, vented his frustrations at his team’s disappointing defeat and said they needed to be more clinical in front of goal.

“We are frustrated and disappointed,” he said. “This is one of the harder days since we started our journey here in Huddersfield three months ago, because I think the gap between our performance and the result is unbelievably big.

“In my opinion, the lads did a very good performance. They played great football on the pitch.

“Today we saw two different philosophies. One team liked to hit the long ball and the other tried to perform on the pitch, which we did very well. We created great scoring opportunities, but we only scored once.

“We have to be more clinical. Before our goal, we had six goal chances where we have to score. Their goalkeeper was in unbelievable form today though.”

Rai Simons came on at half-time for Chesterfield in their 1-0 home defeat to nine-man Peterborough United in League One

Debutant Tom Nichols scored the only goal in the 55th minute as Peterborough held on for a dramatic win.

The home side had Michael Smith sent off for a second yellow card in the 58th minute and were further depleted when Ricardo Santos followed him 20 minutes later.

Simons and Dan Gardner had shots blocked as they looked to capitalise, but to no avail.

Also in action was Reggie Lambe who came on as a 78th-minute substitute in Mansfield Town’s 2-1 home win over Morecombe in League Two.

Scott Shearer, the Mansfield goalkeeper, who the hero for the home side, saving penalties from Shaun Miller and Paul Mullin.

The visiting side took the lead after just 56 seconds when Kevin Ellison dispatched a low finish past Shearer.

But Mansfield were level after 15 minutes when Matty Blair’s 20-yard strike came off the head of Ryan Edwards and sailed up and over Barry Roche, the Morecombe goalkeeper.

They were ahead after 24 minutes as Krystian Pearce smashed home a six-yard header from Mal Benning’s corner.
