Bermuda has not been ruled out as a potential host for next year’s tenth and final Louis Vuitton America’s World Series regatta.

The America’s Cup Event Authority has already announced five World Series events for this year.

The first one took place in Oman last month and will be followed by regattas in New York, Chicago, Portsmouth and Toulon, France.

Two additional events are expected to be announced, with one to be determined in Asia in November, while all six competitors involved in the 35th America’s Cup have unanimously agreed to compete in an additional World Series regatta in the first three months of 2017.

Bermuda could be a strong contender to host the final event, with all of the teams expected to be on island early next year for final preparations for the start of the qualifiers. The wing-sail, foiling AC45F catamarans raced in the World Series are expected to be back on island around that time, as they will also be used for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, of which Bermuda will be represented.

Bermuda hosted the third World Series regatta last October, which was won by Swedish challenger Artemis Racing, who overcame a crash in the second race with the umpires boat at the start.

According to an impact study, the event, the first official America’s Cup racing held in Bermuda’s waters, generated an estimated $8.6 million — some $6.9 million over projections.More than 10,000 people attended the Event Village on Front Street throughout the weekend and on the Sunday an estimated 550 boats, carrying about 5,000 spectators, watched the racing from the Great Sound.

Meanwhile, the top two teams at the conclusion of the World Series earn bonus points for the qualifiers, which will be held in Bermuda in May 2017.

Emirates Team New Zealand top the overall World Series leaderboard by six points from Oracle Team USA, whom they lost to after squandering an 8-1 lead at the previous America’s Cup Match in San Francisco.

Land Rover BAR, the British challenger, won last month’s World Series in Oman to become the regatta’s first multiple winners, having also won last year’s opening regatta in home waters in Portsmouth.

New York will host the next World Series regatta on May 7 and 8.
