Dockyard retailer doubles floor space

Expansion: Hand Made Bermuda is expecting business to be brisk this cruise ship season

An arts and crafts store in Dockyard’s Clocktower Mall is set to double in size.

The store, which opened just three years ago, has taken over a vacant unit next door to expand the display area for its growing range of goods.

Andrea Moniz, co-owner of Hand Made Bermuda with Jan Quinn, said: “We’re going to take down the wall and expand. It will basically double our floor space.”

Ms Moniz, a former bank business analyst who was made redundant in 2012, added: “We’ve got so many people’s products here that we need a little bit more display room.”

Ms Quinn, who worked in an office before branching out, started making sea glass jewellery, sold at markets and the Dockyard Arts Centre before quitting her job and making her hobby into a career.

Hand Made Bermuda specialises in Bermuda-made gifts and art, including jewellery, ceramics, glassware, soap and scrubs, clothing, jams and artwork.

The company also stocks craft materials and runs regular workshops in various design skills.

Ms Moniz said: “Each year is getting better and this year there are more cruise ships coming in and we’re definitely a cruise ship-based retail operation.”

She added that she expected the 2017 America’s Cup would also provide a boost for business.

Ms Moniz said: “I don’t think it will affect us directly, but indirectly, there will be more people here and more interest in Bermuda. It’s almost like an advertisement for Bermuda.”

The new-look and bigger store is expected to be ready by the beginning of April.

Ms Moniz added: “We have so much in this one space — what comes after location is display and in order for us to make our products look better, we definitely need more space. We have so much and we need to spread it around.”

Ms Moniz added: “It’s not always been easy, but you can’t always expect it to be easy in retail. Last year with the hurricanes ... you never know what’s going to happen. But the pros outweigh the cons.”
