Michael Dunkley and Jeff Baron, Junior Minister of National Security, were on hand to meet with youngsters. Saluting the youth team for seizing "this once in a lifestime opportunity", the Premier said: "They are reaching over boundaries they have never crossed, and gaining skills they will have for the rest of their lives - showing us that when opportunity knocks, you must open the door." The final cut is fast approaching for the 30 candidates trying to make Bermuda’s team for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.

A last training camp, which will take place at several locations around the island including at the Oracle Team USA base in Dockyard and Darrell’s Island, will begin next Wednesday.

Coaches will put the group through a series of intensive tests both on and off the water, before selecting a final squad of up to 18 athletes.

“After this camp our mindset will shift,” Craig Brown, vice-chairman of the Team Bermuda committee, said. “The candidates will no longer be a collection of sailors and athletes, but Team BDA, a single unit, coming together to represent their country, chasing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

The final racing team will consist of six Red Bull Youth America’s Cup squad members, with others supporting as training partners and a shore team.
