Bermuda trio put through their paces in US

Testing times: players run a drill at the Alexander Basketball Academy

Three players from Team Hurricane Basketball Academy are showcasing their skills as part of the Global Squad — an intensive summer programme run by Alexander Basketball Academy.

Bryce Gonsalves, Jorel Smith, and Rye Ahronson are attending the month-long academy in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, which runs until July 27.

The Global Squad provides international student-athletes, representing dozens of countries, with an opportunity to get recruited by United States colleges and universities.

In the past four years they have helped more than 40 players get recruited by colleges, universities, junior colleges and top prep schools.

Team Hurricane players are being trained by a coaching staff that includes professional players, present and former NCAA basketball players.

It is the first time Ahronson has taken part in the programme.

“Global Squad is helping me to improve my game,” he said. “The coaches are very demanding, but we are learning about responsibility and how to push ourselves.

“It’s been an awesome experience so far. I’m thankful for Team Hurricane providing me with this opportunity.”

Several other Team Hurricane players were also able to take part in a recruiting event organised by the Alexa der Basketball Academy from July 6 to 8.

Doug Reed, the Team Hurricane founder-head coach, said: “I’m extremely pleased about this experience for the players and the Team Hurricane programme overall.

“We are so very fortunate to be able to provide our student-athletes with an opportunity take part in high level grass-roots basketball and the recruiting scene.”
