Designs created by five young Bermudians studying architecture and interior design are being put on display at Washington Mall.

The student design showcase is open to the public, and is being promoted by the Institute of Bermuda Architects.

Among the projects is a thesis on the Bermuda Airport project, by Kejon Sampson, who has completed a master’s in architecture at Roger Williams University, Rhode Island.

While Azra Smith has proposed a laundromat and coffee shop combination for an eco-village in Kensington, Philadelphia. Ms Smith is studying architecture design at Temple University in Philadelphia.

The showcase is located on the upper level of the mall. There will be an opening reception on Thursday evening. The display is open to the public until the end of the month.

The presentations are projects completed by the students as part of their education and not completed in professional offices.

Current and recent graduates of architecture, interior design or landscape architecture degree programmes were invited to apply for inclusion in the showcase.

The other students included being featured are Madeline Brash, who studied interior design at Humber College, in Toronto, Ayo-Oluwa Salawu, who is studying architecture and environmental engineering at the University of the West of England, and Kevin Simmons, who has completed a master’s in architecture at Oxford Brookes University, in England.

Duncan Simons, president of the IBA, said: “We are delighted to be able to showcase the work of these young Bermudians and give them due recognition as the future of Bermudian architecture.

“We hope that the public sees the hard work that they have done and that young people will be inspired to find out more about architecture and interior design.”

The opening reception on Thursday is from 5.30pm until 7.30pm. Tickets cost $5 on the door and proceeds will go towards the cost of the event
