Drink-driver caught at checkpoint

A man was banned from the roads for 18 months after he admitted riding while more than double the drink-driving limit.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Dean Spencer, 51, of Sandys, was stopped at a roadside breath test checkpoint on Middle Road in Southampton after he was seen to be unsteady on his motorbike.

He failed a roadside breath test and was taken to Hamilton Police Station for a further test.

Spencer was found to have 162mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mg/100ml.

The incident happened just after 10pm on December 28.

Senior Magistrate Juan Wolffe also fined Spencer $1,000.
