A woman who admitted stealing more than $110,000 from her employers was sentenced to a year in jail at the Supreme Court yesterday. But Acting Puisne Judge Juan Wolffe suspended six months of Deidre Woolgar’s sentence for two years.Mr Justice Wolffe said aggravating circumstances included the nature and seriousness of the offences, the degree of trust placed in Woolgar and the damage or loss she caused.But he acknowledged mitigation included the defendant’s guilty plea, her previous good character, as well as her genuine expression of remorse and her low risk of reoffending.Mr Justice Wolffe said full restitution had also been made.He added: “While not strictly a mitigating circumstance, the defendant’s current mental health condition and her mental health status at the time of the commission of the offences are also factors which should rightly be given consideration.”Mr Justice Wolffe said he had “good reason to suspend part of this term of imprisonment”.He added: “Specifically, the defendant’s mental health condition, the substantial restitution made by the defendant, and the length of time that this matter has taken to progress.”Woolgar pleaded guilty in June 2019 to charges of theft and false accounting after her employers, electrical supply company Circuit Supply Inc, discovered she failed to deposit $110,759 in cash sales over a year.She was employed by CSI as office manager, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the company and worked without direct supervision.Woolgar first appeared in Magistrates’ Court in June 2018.Mr Justice Wolffe said a range of factors were responsible for the slow progress of the case, none of which were the fault of the defendant.• It is The Royal Gazette’s policy not to allow comments on stories regarding court cases.
