Janeiro Tucker scored 71 not out to lead a Bermuda Select team to a one-run victory in King City, Toronto, on Tuesday in the first of three matches against a Canada High Performance side.

Winning the toss, Bermuda batted first and posted 201 for six in a game that started as a 50-over contest but was reduced to 32 because of rain. Canada replied with 200 for eight.

Terryn Fray, the Bermuda captain, shared in an opening stand of 39 with Kamau Leverock, before Fray was trapped leg-before for six. Leverock, who dominated the stand with Fray, departed seven runs later after scoring 38 of the first 46 runs. He hit six fours in his 40 minutes at the crease, facing 32 balls.

Bermuda lost further wickets on 69, 70 and 72 as Tre Manders, Dion Stovell and Christof van Tonder went cheaply before Tucker and Charles Trott added 83 for the sixth wicket in 42 minutes.

Tucker, the oldest member of the team at 42, showed his experience as he took on the Canada bowlers late in the innings, hitting seven sixes and three fours in his 47-ball knock. Trott, the young PHC all-rounder, added a valuable 30 from 36 balls, hitting two fours and two sixes before he departed on 155 for six. He also took two wickets.

Tucker and Okera Bascome, the wicketkeeper, added 46 for the seventh wicket, with Bascome scoring 22 not out, including three boundaries.

“We had some good performances with the bat, particularly Janeiro who batted beautifully, scoring on all sides of the field,” Clay Smith, the Bermuda coach, said. “Kamau got us off to a solid start, scoring freely at the top of the order, then Okera came in at the end to score a well-deserved 22 not out.

“Charles Trott had a very good all-round game. He bowled extremely well under immense pressure, which was good to see, and young Chare Smith also bowled intelligently and effectively in his first game. Overall, it was a good team performance, but we can still get better.”

Rishiv Joshi, who shared the new ball with Faisal Jamkhandi, led the Canada attack with three for 37, while Farhan Malik claimed two for 16.

Canada lost their first wicket on nine, when Rayyan Khan was caught by Van Tonder off Leverock. Opener Ayoub Ahmad was second out for 34 when the score was 47. Spinner Jordan Smith then removed wicketkeeper Mazhar Hayat for 17 to make it 55 for three.

Harsh Thaker, batting at No 7, was high man with 63 not out from 39 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes. Captain Junaid Siddiqui scored 23.

Chare Smith, the first change, claimed two wickets for 36 for Bermuda while Trott had two for 30, both from seven overs. Leverock, Jordan Smith and Tucker took one wicket apiece.

Bermuda play their second match today against a Canada Select before closing out the tour against another select team tomorrow.
