Warwick will be missing a key player when they battle with Flatts in the season-ending First Division Twenty20 final at Sea Breeze Oval tomorrow.

Wicketkeeper Amari Ebbin, who is in school in Cardiff, returned last night to Britain, where he is due to have trials with a couple of clubs.

Ebbin is one of three on Warwick’s books who is playing in Britain, the others being Cameron Jeffers and fast bowler Chare Smith, who made his Cup debut with St George’s last month.

Warwick hope to make up for the disappointment of not being able to play their Western Counties Cup match against champions Southampton Rangers two months ago because of rain.

“We are playing really good cricket at the end of the year,” coach Lorenzo Tucker said. “We’re 4-0 to get to the final, as were Flatts, so it’s going to be a really good match.

“The guys are definitely ready. We’re one of the only clubs still training and had a training session last night.

“We’re very determined to win this trophy for the club, which would be the first trophy in 14 years. In 2004 we won the Western Counties, but haven’t won anything since.”

Warwick finished with a 3-0 record in their T20 group matches and then got by Devonshire Rec in the semi-final last weekend. Now a tough match against promoted Flatts awaits them. Warwick already beat Cleveland, the other promoted team, on their way to winning their group and Tucker is confident this young Warwick team can build on what they accomplished late in the season.

“If we are able to beat Flatts and keep the guys together it will springboard our programme tremendously because the guys will see that the processes that we’re doing are bearing fruit,” Tucker said.

“We felt real confident going into the Western Counties against a powerhouse like Rangers, and put some good work in. Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t allow us to showcase our talents, but now we hope to showcase them on Sunday.

“Because of the timing we had Chare Smith, Cameron Jeffers and Amari Ebbin back, all playing cricket at a good level in the UK. They’ve come back and contributed to us getting into the final, but Amari, our wicketkeeper-batsman, flies out tonight so we won’t have him.

“But we will have Cameron and Chare for the final against Flatts. Cameron is going to Australia at the end of September for seven months to do some training and hook up with David Moore [the former Bermuda coach].”

Tucker added: “If we had those three guys for an entire season, Warwick would be fighting for promotion, no doubt. We beat Cleveland and if we beat Flatts, we would have beaten both the teams that are going up.”

Warwick are captained by fast bowler Stephan Dill and also contain another promising youngster in Jamar Stovell, both of whom took two wickets for 14 runs last weekend in the 51-run win over Devonshire Rec. Jeffers was outstanding with both the bat and ball, scoring 37 and then claiming three for 11.
