Man shot in Pembroke

Hunting for clues: Police officers, some with metal detectors, search Crane Lane, in Pembroke, after a 29 year-old Pembroke male checked himself into hospital with a gunshot wound.

A 29-year-old man checked himself into hospital after being shot yesterday afternoon.The shooting happened in the road in Crane Lane, Pembroke, shortly before 3 p.m. Police say the victim suffered a gunshot wound to his body but his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

The road was cordoned off for the rest of the afternoon, with a large Police presence as officers combed the area with metal detectors.Opposition Leader Kim Swan called for those in the community connected with the gangs, their friends and families to bring their influence to bear and bring and end to the violence.

In a statement, he said: “With two shootings in as many days many people in the communities – Crane Lane / St. Monica’s and White Hill where these incidents happened – are living in fear and anxiety.

”The United Bermuda Party through Shadow Public Safety Minister Senator Michael Dunkley have being calling for the Government to support Operation Ceasefire and a Peace Summit as this country needs to get to the root of the violence and restore peace to our streets and communities.”Government needs to act on these type of initiatives (Operation Ceasefire and Peace Summit) which will galvanise the positive influences in our community – like Emperial Group, Cartel, Rise Above, United Churches and other community organisations – get to the core of what is causing the violence and bring peace back to our communities.”
