A 19-year-old man is in intensive care after being shot in the area of Rambling Lane, Pembroke, last night.

The Bermuda Police Service confirmed a shooting took place at 10.30pm and that the victim, from Pembroke, was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by private vehicle for treatment.

He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, but a police spokesman said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. In an update at 10am today, the victim was said to remain in a critical condition.

It is understood the victim is not 19-year-old Mikiel Thomas, who was charged with the fatal stabbing of Raymond Butterfield in Magistrates’ Court yesterday. Police say it is too early to say whether the incident was gang-related.

Shortly after midnight, a heavy police presence remained at the scene, with about five vehicles and several officers in front of a residence.

Witnesses or anyone else with information should contact the serious crime unit on 247-1739 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.

Later today Minister of national security Jeff Baron released the following statement: “Within the last week, our community has once again been terrorised by violence. And tragically, this past weekend our community lost another young man — Raymond Butterfield. Our sincerest condolences are extended to Mr Butterfield’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Sadly, last night, another young man — a teenager — was shot and is currently in the ICU.

“Throughout this week I have met with the Police Commissioner to discuss our concerns about the increase in these violent incidents. As it relates to last night’s shooting, the Police are actively investigating the matter — and I echo their calls for anyone who may be able to assist the Police to please come forward and share what you know.

“Earlier this month, I announced multiple strategies that will make it harder for dangerous individuals to use violence on another member of our community. But clearly, we recognise that more must be done to safeguard and protect our citizens. Government cannot do it alone.

“The Ministry of National Security continues to progress with implementing Operation Ceasefire, a community-collaborative initiative that has proven to be effective in curbing violence. I recognise that all of Bermuda is extremely weary of these continuing incidences of gun violence and anti-social behaviour. And it is my hope that members of our community will partner with us in the spirit of collaboration as we work to seek solutions to address the challenges that we face.”
