Star pupil Mendes is off to study maths at McGill

Runner: Brianna Mendes is the Bermuda Under-20 girls 1,500 metres champion

Star pupil Brianna Mendes has won the Dudley and Deborah Butterfield Scholarship 2017 to study at Canada’s McGill University.

She will start at Montreal-based McGill next month to study for a bachelor of commerce degree with a major in mathematics.

Ms Mendes, who attended Bermuda High School, notched up 12 GCSEs at A* and was awarded the Doris Trott Butterfield Scholarship for the highest GPA.

She completed the International Baccalaureate diploma programme at BHS and in 2017 achieved a score of 45, the highest academic score possible, which placed her in the top 0.3 per cent of students worldwide.

She was also awarded the MacKenzie Gibbons Riihiluoma Cup and The Lucy Glynn Award for the highest academic achievement.

In addition, Ms Mendes was elected house captain by fellow BHS pupils and was one of two pupils who organised the first careers fair at the school.

The fair is now a fixture in the school’s calendar and held every two years.

In her final year at BHS, Ms Mendes also organised a networking event for students to help them practice building professional relationships.

She took part in conferences in Canada and Singapore organised by Round Square, a worldwide association of schools which make a commitment, beyond academic excellence, to personal development and responsibility.

She won the internationally recognised Round Square King Constantine Medal for her work to advance the aims of the organisation.

Outside school, Ms Mendes was a tutor, participated in the YouthNet peer mentoring programme and has volunteered with Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation for the past three years.

She was a member of the school netball, volleyball, track and cross-country teams.

She qualified for the Carifta Games in Curaçao in March this year and represented Bermuda in the 3000 metre event.

Ms Mendes was the Bermuda national cross-country champion for under-20 girls last year and Bermuda national 1500 metres champion this year.

The McGill Bermuda Scholarship Trust was set up in 1988 with a donation by Dudley and Deborah Butterfield, plus further donations from McGill graduates in Bermuda.
