A young man’s passion for serving food has been given a $5,000 boost thanks to a tireless chef.

The first Louise Jones scholarship from the Young Men’s Social Club has gone to Jai-Onni Outerbridge, 22, a longstanding member of the club, now at Abertay University in Scotland.

His studies for a Bachelor’s degree in Food and Consumer Science have been furthered with funds raised by Ms Jones’s dedicated codfish breakfasts at the club on Princess Street in Hamilton.

Troy Lewis, the YMSC vice-president, said Ms Jones had been “instrumental” in raising money for the club’s youth programme.

He added: “Ms Jones’s dedication and commitment exemplifies the true value of community service — her ideas and efforts helped make it possible for us to give a scholarship.”

The scholarship also got support from Colonial Group.

Mr Outerbridge thanked the club for the award, adding: “It will help take the pressure off my parents as well.”

Diallo Rabain, the Minister of Education, also commended YMSC.

Mr Rabain said: “There is nothing better than watching a young man fulfil his potential.

“We need more grass roots programmes like this that take youngsters and help nurture and develop them.”

Senator Vance Campbell, the newly elected club president, said Ms Jones and Mr Outerbridge were “fine examples of the club’s values put into action”.
