Strong finish for Rabain

Fine showing: Rabain exceeded her expectations at the World Jumping Finals in Algeria

Kirista Rabain secured a sixth-place finish in the final of the FEI World Jumping Finals in Algiers, Algeria, at the weekend.

Rabain, riding Vitamine Semilly, an eight-year-old Selle Français bay mare, was up against the top ten riders from the combined scores in the first and second qualifying competition.

In the first round of the final, Rabain finished with a time of 78.74 and in the second round she posted a time of 53.98 with four faults. The 25-year-old then finished with a time of 35.17 with eight faults in the jump-off.

The 25-year-old, who came third in the Farewell Competition in her only previous appearance at the finals in Zhitnica, Bulgaria, in 2015, had targeted a top-ten finish before the competition.

Nitin Gupta, of India, won the event, with Mesbah Fahid, of Algeria, coming second and Lupe Valente, of Uruguay, placing third.

Countries also competing included New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, Iran, Venezuela, Ecuador, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritius and Uzbekistan.

The event had been set for May 3 to 6 but was postponed after the Algerian Government suspended all sporting and cultural events because of its parliamentary elections.

Rabain, who rides at Hinson Hall Stables in Devonshire, qualified for the competition by winning the World Jumping Challenge at the National Equestrian Centre in March.

Philip Correia, who won a silver medal at last year’s event in Rabat, Morocco, also qualified as one of the region’s top-two riders, but was unable to travel because of work commitments.
