Finding inspiration in colour and performance

Labour of love: Singleton

With designs inspired by the speed and agility of the boats and Bermuda, TABS focused on the performance and colour for the America’s Cup collection.

And Rebecca Singleton, TABS founder, said: “Nothing says Bermuda quite like Bermuda shorts!”

The items she is offering for the America’s Cup are Bermuda shorts for men, women and kids; swim shorts for men and kids; polo shirts; pocket squares; Bermuda socks and fedora hats.

All the items were designed specifically for the 35th America’s Cup and Mrs Singleton connected with artists to create parts of the collection.

“I partnered with local artists and photographers to create the inside lining of the shorts, as well as using aerial images of the boats racing and creating patterns that were then digitally printed onto the swim shorts,” she said of the 30-plus products.

“All inspired by the speed and agility of the boats and Bermuda, the designs are focused on performance and colour.”

She added that she wanted to create timeless pieces that will capture the vibrancy of the event here in Bermuda.

“Bermuda has a long maritime history and we are proud to be part of the story as an official licensee of the 35th America’s Cup.”

Mrs Singleton’s background is in marketing, but after taking fashion courses in London, she bit the bullet and launched TABS in 2013 and went full-time two years later. And last summer, she opened her flagship store on Reid Street.

“We opened our doors in August 2016,” she said. “A labour of love, I wanted to create a space where customers could learn more about the inspiration behind the brand and the history of Bermuda shorts.

“We have also partnered with other Bermuda designers to create jewellery, hats and even Bermuda jams! It’s not just a shop, it’s an experience. Come and check us out!”

Mrs Singleton decided to apply to become an America’s Cup Licensee as soon as she heard Bermuda won the bid.

“I reached out to the committee and expressed my interest,” she said.

“The process was relatively smooth. The most challenging thing I have right now is looking after my newborn baby whilst launching the new collection!”

As a former marketing professional, having her collection in the licensee programme is essentially a marketer’s dream come true.

“It’s the potential of getting my brand in front of millions of people and to show off our beautiful island to the world.”

All items will be available in the flagship store at 12 Reid Street, www.tabsbermuda.com, in the America’s Cup Fan store and at AS Cooper, Luxury Gifts and the Coral Beach Club.
