Port Royal hole ‘one of best in world’

Treacherous tiddler: the 16th at Port Royal is considered one of the best par threes in the world. The stunning backdrop could be a distraction though, according to CNN Sport

Port Royal Golf Course’s signature 16th hole has been named as one of the best par-three holes in the world.

The breathtaking hole captures the imagination of all that play it, and has it been mentioned in the same breath by CNN Sport as the 17th at TPC Sawgrass, Florida, the 7th at Pebble Beach Golf Links, and the 12th at Augusta National, Georgia.

“Paradise or purgatory? Port Royal is one of Bermuda’s best tracks and its signature hole is the sea-hugging 16th across the cliffs,” CNN Sport wrote on its website.

“The bewitching backdrop of azure Atlantic waters could be a distraction, though.”

When Justin Rose, who won the US Open in 2013, played at Port Royal in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf that same year, he said of the 16th: “The interesting thing on that hole is you don’t feel the breeze on the tee box that much.

“You just never allow for enough when the wind is coming from the right.”

The other par-three holes selected by CNN as “treacherous tiddlers” were the 9th at Trump Turnberry, Scotland, the 8th at Royal Troon, Scotland, the 16th at TPC Scottsdale, Arizona, the 16th at Cypress Point, California, the 4th at Championship course, Royal County Down, Northern Ireland, the 10th at Royal Dornoch, Scotland, and the Extreme 19th at Entabeni, South Africa.
