Good luck with America’s Cup transport

Attracting crowds: people on Front Street during October’s Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Bermuda event (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

Your reporter Simon Jones’s article on “efficient” transport for the America’s Cup event left a few unanswered questions.

However, I am making a few assumptions, which may or may not be correct.

1, There will be two large ships berthed in Dockyard, holding some 4,000 passengers plus 1,500 crew each; therefore, about 11,000 persons

2, There will be anywhere between 5,000 and 10,000 people staying in hotels, guesthouses, etc (a conservative estimate)

3, There are a limited number of buses, ferries and taxis to transport 20,000 people

4, There is one narrow road out of Dockyard and Somerset, so, again, assuming half travel by boat and half by road, one still has to get some 10,000 people in and out of Somerset by road

Maybe, if we build that bridge between Spanish Point and Dockyard, it would ease the situation, but I forgot, we don’t have any money for such a project.

We have so much debt, so we will become a Fourth World country. Am I missing something? Good luck on getting everyone moved around in a timely manner.

Quo fata ferunt.
