A Bermudian oddity about the Olympics

Dear Sir,

What I find fascinating about Bermuda regarding the Olympics is that it’s odd we never have athletes for the following sports:

1, Football. Yes, the only ways there could have been a football team is by eliminating any chances of drug violations, and for the team to be coached by an international coach, plus the chance that players such as Nahki Wells actually get paid to play for such a team.

2, Basketball. Even though we have great players such as Chris Crumpler, John Lee, and Sullivan Phillips, we never seem to have enough players to form an actual team good enough to compete in the Olympics.

3, Beach volleyball. People often play this at times, and yet there are never two extremely fit males or females to represent Bermuda in such a sport.

4, Indoor volleyball. There’s never a good team qualified enough to compete in such a sport.

5, Tennis. This should be right up our alley, since we’re the ones who invented the sport from the start, yet we never seem to have any professionals competing in the Olympics. Ever.

6, Athletics. We have athletes who are good enough to compete in Carifta Games, but never good enough to compete in the Olympics.

7, Swimming. Although we have people competing in such a sport now, it’s never enough. There are swimmers who win medals in the Carifta Games, but never good enough to compete in anything higher, unfortunately.

8, Cycling. We have two professional people in triathlon — Tyler Butterfield and Flora Duffy — but never anyone good enough just for cycling.

Had Bermuda been able to have more athletes in the Olympics, our chances of getting a medal probably would’ve been higher. At least Clarence Hill achieved that 40 years ago.

REALITY CHECK, Devonshire
