Bermuda needs to take hard stance

Dear Sir,

It was my intention earlier today to write regarding the Marc Bean “fluff” piece in the RG Magazine yesterday (December 1), which I found disturbing considering the carte blanche given to Mr Bean to have his say without any searching questions by an interviewer being posed.

However, having watched the shenanigans taking place at the House of Assembly today, more grave matters present themselves.

Today’s “demonstration” is a stark reminder of what leaders — in this case, the Opposition and the unions — can provoke when trying to further their divisive objectives by rallying a small portion of Bermuda’s voters.

Civil disobedience, when it involves physically preventing elected Members of Parliament from performing their duties, is unacceptable and surely is in violation of the laws of the land.

It is a proven fact that allowing small infractions of the law often leads to much larger infractions being committed. Bermuda needs to take a hard stance against such behaviour, be the offenders black, white, Progressive Labour Party, One Bermuda Alliance or of any other persuasion.

If people wish to oppose the new airport plan, or any other proposed plan, there are many ways of making their views known.

Uncivil and violent behaviour should not be the norm, and any inciting of such behaviour should be unacceptable and addressed by the appropriate authorities.
