How I miss Woolcock’s cartoons

The late Peter Woolcock

Dear Sir,

Bermudians have always been known as a proud and gracious people. Having said this, I cannot understand why our one and only newspaper, namely The Royal Gazette, would print a cartoon designed to degrade the legally elected president of the United States.

We all accept that Bermuda is but a dot in the Atlantic and, as a people we are very grateful for the assistance and friendship shown to us by our large neighbour — the United States of America.

In a matter of a few weeks the America’s Cup will take place and many people from all over the world will be visiting our island to see the great event.

I ask you, Mr Editor, to cease this very unnecessary type of publication which is bound to offend a large number of our visitors. I did not vote for Mr Trump or any other candidate — I am not an American citizen but the poor taste demonstrated in our newspaper by these cartoons is totally unnecessary.

I am, I admit, rather nostalgic for the old days and miss the cartoons of the Peter Woolcock era. In the main, his cartoons were devoted to local residents’ events and places. They were drawn with both great artistry and compassion and not once do I recall any form of malice demonstrated within his delicious sense of humour.
