Dear Sir,

Time and time again we have heard and read in our community the words that the America’s Cup is a white man’s sport and will benefit only the rich and white elitist of Bermuda — and not the average Bermudian.

For those among us who feel that this is indeed the case, please just take the time and look around at all of the island’s infrastructure that has been upgraded for the betterment of all of our residents and visitors alike.

In the words of Vicky Hamshere, who stated in her recent Letter to the Editor: “All of the road resurfacing, painting, building restoration and general improvements throughout our island, which have been done to make Bermuda beautiful again for this event. The America’s Cup is a benefit to each and every one of us.”

So very true Ms Hamshere. What about the many other numerous benefits that the America’s Cup has bestowed on Bermuda by being here. The many visitors and various news media from around the world that have flocked to our shores to view and enjoy not only the spectacle of AC35, but also the beauty of our people and the island as well. This in turn has greatly benefited our residents who have rented out their homes and apartments for big dollars, hotels, guesthouses, transportation — taxis, buses, ferries — restaurants and retail outlets. All of which hire Bermudian staff.

And, last but not least, what about the various racing syndicates themselves, the sailors and their family members, who have not only given financially to various local charities but also freely of their time to assist in local community projects.

For those in our midst who saw an opportunity to reach out and grasp that opportunity while not waiting for one to land in their lap, I salute you — for you have contributed to the benefit of us all.

While it would have been very nice if all Bermudians were asked to line up so that each and every one of us could be handed a fistful of dollars — our share of the spoils — this is not how it works in the “real world”.

Even if this were the case, with the present culture of entitlement that some Bermudians feel, there will still be some who will oppose the gesture if for no other reason than to believe the amount to be insufficient. After all, we would have had to stand and wait in a line to receive it.

The time has now come when we all should put politics aside and stand together and give thanks to Oracle Team USA for putting their faith and trust in Bermuda by bringing the America’s Cup to our island.

I, for one, truly appreciate the wonderful gift that Oracle have bestowed on Bermuda and its people, and I wish them good fortune in their defence of the America’s Cup.
