Timing of no-confidence vote appalling

David Burt (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

Dear Sir,

I would like to say thank you to Wendell Hollis for his opinion on May 23. It is a very well-made point and he is absolutely correct.

This no confidence vote’s timing is appalling politics, a sad, pathetic attempt to divert attention at the most exciting time in our island’s history.

As always, the race card is played. I have never viewed Bermuda as white or black; I see Bermuda as an island with the most wonderful people gracing our shores.

Yes there are some sceptical characters that touch all colours, races, religions and so on, but that sort are to be found everywhere. Interestingly enough, some of these “sceptical” ones have the courage to stand for public office.

Bermuda has been presented with the most wonderful opportunity to showcase ourselves and our island. It is there for all to try and benefit from: taxi drivers, restaurant workers, hotel workers, charter fishing boats, bus drivers, anyone working in the public or private sector, and even those retired persons can benefit from this fantastic event if they are willing to put in a bit of effort.

Or if you choose to, you can lay in the tide crying foul that the Americas Cup will benefit only a few, but these sort are also to be found everywhere.

It is easy to be nice, so let us all be nice.

To address the topic that my friend Mr Hollis was addressing, I have to point out that the vote of no confidence is interesting.

The irony of this no-confidence call from Mr Burt is not lost on anyone with a modicum of intelligence.

No confidence? Are you joking? How can anyone have any confidence that the Progressive Labour Party can ever lead this island again.

In 1998, the PLP inherited a ship full of oil steaming ahead with great momentum.

Twelve years later, the One Bermuda Alliance is handed a wreck that was close to foundering, with an empty tank and a $2 billion bill to repay. No confidence? Don’t make me laugh.
