Why do they ask these questions?

Dear Sir,
I find it quite incredible when one calls for service with some of the utility companies.
The first question is “What is your telephone number?” — a reasonable one to obtain one’s location. The second one is to confirm one’s name and address, again reasonable.
The third one is for your driving licence number. What this has to do with the situation is beyond my comprehension.
Having all of this information, then the last question is: “What is your date of birth?”
This too is totally ridiculous, especially when my response was “January 1, 1900”. No comment was made, so it makes me wonder about the validity of these questions.
