Forum for women entrepreneurs

A new forum for women in business is set to launch.

The brainchild of Stephanie Lee, founder of online optimisation company SocialLEE, said the Women who Own and Manage Business — Bermuda group started as an online group.

But the WOMB Facebook group grew so fast, she decided to start holding a series of events as well.

Ms Lee said that more than 250 people signed up to the page in just 72 hours.

She added: “That told me something — women want and need a platform to connect without many of the perceived barriers like industry, class or income.

“Although the Facebook page provides an outlet, I wanted to create more engagement among women and therefore have organised a series of networking events.

“At these events, women can connect, interact and engage with other female entrepreneurs and leaders.

“They also have an opportunity to promote their business to a captive audience.”

The first event, to be held at Muse Skybar on Front Street from 5.30pm on Thursday, will feature women-led businesses catering to school-aged young people.

Local anti-drug charity Pride Bermuda, the Learning World of Bermuda, a teacher supply store and Kim’s List, a resource website for parents featuring products, businesses and services for children and young people, will all be at the event.

Ms Lee said: “Future events will feature other businesses from all sectors and industries.”

Further events will be held in October, November and December, with the November event linked to Women in Entrepreneurship Day and in partnership with the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation.

Erica Smith, executive director of the BEDC, said: “The BEDC is pleased to partner with Stephanie on Women in Entrepreneurship Day.

“Entrepreneurship has been a game changer for many women all over the world and it is fitting that we celebrate this fact and the impact that women entrepreneurs have made locally during Global Entrepreneurship Week.”

Admission to the Muse event this week will cost $15 and includes a drink and snacks, with proceeds going towards the funding of future events.

For tickets, contact Ms Lee on 456-4780 or buy online at bdatix.bm, but Ms Lee said walk-ups are welcome.
