A long-established Hamilton bar is up for sale.

Casey’s, a fixture on Queen Street for more than 40 years, has been put on the market by owner Gladwyn Phillips.

Mr Phillips, who plans to retire after 40 years in the trade, said: “I’m just getting ready to retire — it’s that simple.

“It’s time to ride off into the sunset.”

Mr Phillips added: “I have been in Casey’s myself more than 23 years and everything I needed to do to push myself forward, I’ve done.”

Mr Phillips said the sale included the bar as a going concern, as well as an upper floor, rented out to a clothing store.

He added: “Casey’s is a profitable business — it’s a great opportunity to get into business or own a piece of real estate in the city.”

Casey’s was founded across the street more than four decades ago, moving to its present location around 35 years ago.

Mr Phillips said: “The crowd has always been the same — it’s a mature, older crowd. We don’t have any problems here.

“Casey’s has been one of the safest and friendliest places in the city to have a drink.

“It’s a good opportunity for someone looking for a start in the business.

“The bar is still fully operational and continuing to make money as we look for a buyer.”

Mr Phillips added: “Casey’s is worldwide — we have an Instagram page and we keep in touch with people from all over, especially tourists that are repeat visitors.

“It can still go on the way it’s been, but my retirement is kind of important now.”

Mr Phillips said he started work in the former 40 Thieves club on Front Street aged 17.

He added: “I shouldn’t have been there, really.”

The business was advertised for sale in Friday’s edition of The Royal Gazette.

The upstairs area features an open plan area with bathroom facilities upstairs.
