Pursuing her business dream

Davika Hill has dreamt of starting her own business since she was five years old.

“Even at that age, I knew I wanted to have some kind of flexibility and to be able to call the shots for my own life,” the 30-year-old said.

Last December the dream became reality when she set up Creative Colabs , providing administrative, human resource and simple design services to artists, creatives and entrepreneurs.

“The mission of my business is to be able to support my clients so that they can focus on the aspects of their business or project that they love the most,” she said. “I love helping people to get organised and focused so that they can reach their goals and launching this business has been a great way for me to do that.”

She decided it was time to start Creative Colabs last year when the nursery and preschool she’d been working at, in a supervisory role, closed.

“I worked there for five years,” she said. “I did a lot of admin work there, and a lot of HR work, and supervisory work. I really, really loved that job.”

When the job ended, she knew it was time to reassess.

“In moving on, I looked at it as, maybe this is a time where I should think deeply about my entrepreneurship goals and what I want to do,” she said.

Looking over her life, she realised she had a diverse range of skills.

While in college, she’d spent a summer working at Butterfield Bank in the learning and development department.

“That was where I was first introduced to HR work,” she said.

She is also a poet and artist and belonged to the now inactive arts collective, Bermudian Artists Rise Up.

“Even within working with Baru, I took more of an admin role, and assisted with planning the exhibitions and making sure all the artists had their work in on time,” she said. “I dealt with any documents that had to be signed off.”

So Creative Colabs was born, offering freelance administrative services.

“That includes general HR work, and HR assistance,” she said. “I do employee documents and I can help with employee reviews because I helped with that in a previous job.

“There is also some design work I do. I am helping one client to update her website. I also have services for artists and creatives as well.

“Anyone needs help planning an art exhibition, or writing a proposal for a grant, or something like that, or putting together an artist resume, I offer those services as well.”

She launched in early December and started getting clients in January, usually small business owners with a creative flair.

Ms Hill said she hasn’t had any major business challenges so far.

“Right now, I’m just trying to get the word out there so I can get more people aware of my business and what I have to offer,” she said.

At the moment, she works from home.

“Maybe one day I might get an office, but for now I work remotely,” she said. “It is nice to be remote because I can have that flexibility if I want to take a trip at some point. I can get some work done on my trip.

“One day I might want to go to the park, or a café to work. Brew [on Front Street] is my new favourite spot if I want to meet a client, or get out of the house and grab a cup of coffee.”
