Fitness instructor who pushes clients hard
Christmas, Easter, high summer, whatever the occasion fitness instructor Kelly Ingham will find a way to turn it into a lesson.
This Hallowe’en while other people were carving pumpkins, the owner of KJS Fitness was working out with hers using it as a weight to lift.
“I have always loved fitness,” said Ms Ingham, who turned 44 this week.
She got her personal training certification in 2012 through a World International Training Schools programme offered at the Bermuda College.
“I wanted to do more with fitness,” she said.
But she didn’t immediately take on clients; she was too busy raising three children.
Then in 2016, a few months after having her fourth child, she decided to do a yearlong training programme for the Bermuda Night of Champions bikini competition.
“I wanted to feel good about myself again,” she said. “That was fun.”
She didn’t place, but was thrilled just to be up on stage. And afterward the personal training clients started rolling in.
Last year, she did an online nutrition certification programme through Precision Nutrition. Today her nutrition business Pro Health Wellness goes hand in hand with KJS Fitness.
She works with clients out of her house in Warwick.
“Because I don’t want strange men walking through my house, I mainly work with women,” she said.
Her clients like working out in the privacy of her home gym.
“A lot of people are very nervous to go to a gym environment, because they feel other people are looking at them or judging them,” she said. “This here is very private. It is just me and the client. They get one-on-one attention. I think a lot of people like that aspect of it.”
But she has a reputation for being firm with her clients.
“I push my clients pretty hard,” she said. “They tell me that too. They will grumble and complain, but I know they are capable of more. A lot of my clients like that I am constantly on them making them accountable. Every day I am e-mailing or messaging my clients saying hey, what have you done today towards your goals, whether it be their nutrition or fitness?”
She works with a wide range of fitness levels.
“Some are beginners,” she said. “Some used to work out, but have fallen off the fitness wagon and want to restart their fitness journey. I have a new client starting who is a part-time student, so she will be coming depending on her class schedule.”
Ms Ingham advertises almost entirely through social media, mainly Facebook.
“I have also gotten a lot of clients through word of mouth,” she said.
In October, WITS named her trainer of the month in their worldwide newsletter.
“You have to give them your social media platforms and they review all of that,” she said. “After this, I am also submitted for trainer of the year. That would be a huge accomplishment if I got that.”
She feels her rates are very competitive. There are no membership fees to use her home gym.
“If they do only the online nutrition programme it is $90 per month,” she said. “If they are also a personal training client of mine that uses the nutrition programme, the rate is reduced to $50 a month. I also offer individual prices which are $35 for half an hour or personal training or clients can do a pack of ten classes for $330.” And if her nutrition clients stick to the programme for the full 12 months, they are automatically entered into a Precision Nutrition draw for $25,000.
“That’s an incentive,” Ms Ingham said. “The client is judged according to their progress across the 12 months. They are competing with people worldwide. That is another incentive.”
Ms Ingham loves seeing people reach their fitness goals.
“I love to see them motivated and get into fitness,” she said.
