The America’s Cup Village could become the perfect amphitheatre for the next Bermuda Karting Club street race in early 2018.

Scott “Skitchy” Barnes, the club president, told The Royal Gazette that talks are under way to stage their season’s showpiece at the West End venue, which hosted the spectacular sailing event in the summer.

A proposal has been submitted but Barnes stressed that, while Wedco was positive after the success of previous Dockyard Grand Prix events, further Bermuda Government approval is needed.

“Our drivers are definitely excited at the prospect,” Barnes said. “The track layout would be big and smooth. It’s something we are looking at making possible.

“It’s a lot different from other races we’ve done. Safety first is our priority, of course.

“But the atmosphere [of the venue] and knowing that it is the home of the America’s Cup ... it will be a different feel; a cool atmosphere.”

Early indications suggest the race will be staged next year, ideally in April or March.

It takes the club about three months of preparation to stage a street race, says Barnes, adding: “It’s looking good. Wedco wants us there. We have done three dockyard events. They love our events but it’s a case of getting it through and getting permission.

“Street races are a good showcase for us. A lot of people have got into the sport through watching them.”

The one-way in, one-way out nature of the reclaimed land facility will also give the club the chance to charge a nominal fee. meaning they can raise more money for community causes.

The quality of the track also widens the scope in terms of attracting drivers from overseas.

Barnes said: “This will enable us to attract international drivers and make it a real international race.”
