Scott Barnes, Jeff Sousa, Ryan Burgess and Nile Bean completed clean sweeps in the Victor DeCosta Memorial Race Day at the Rubis Southside Raceway last weekend.

The thirteenth race day of the Bermuda Karting Club season honoured DeCosta, a keen karter who died aged 43 in 1994, and whose grandsons, Owen and Nathan DeCosta, raced at the meet.

Barnes, the BKC president, looks well set to defend his title in the Shifter class after three wins and also claimed a victories in the L206 Seniors and Tag Seniors.

“As long as nothing goes wrong I should have [the Shifters] wrapped up,” Barnes said. “I’ve always considered myself a Shifter driver; that’s the main class I focus on.”

In the L206 Seniors, David Selley continued to impress with two wins.

“We had a good old battle in all three heats, bumper to bumper,” Barnes said. “He won the first heat, I won the second, and the third was kind of a grudge match.

“I ended up touching a barrier and bent an axle, so he was able to win that one.”

The Tag Seniors saw Blake Horseman pick up a pair of wins, while Ryan Burgess took another step closer to the Tag Juniors title.

He was pushed all of the way, though, by Jorja Thomas, with two seconds, and Ashley Horseman, who was runner-up in heat one.

“Ryan’s got that class all wrapped up, although Jorja’s right on his tail and getting closer and closer,” Barnes added.

“It’s Jorja and Ashley’s first year in the faster class and next year should be a good battle. They’re both champing at the bit to get some wins.”

Sousa continued his tussle for the title with Travis Lewis in the L206 Masters, with Lewis having to settle with three seconds this time around.

“That was a close points race and with the drops I think Jeff is 19 points up, which gives him a little cushion going into that last two race days,” Barnes added.

“That will be a tight championship battle until the end. Travis can still take it, for sure.”

In the Cadets, Nathan DeCosta had a trio of seconds as Bean reasserted his title dominance with three chequered flags.
