The Bermuda Karting Club are offering novices a chance to experience the thrill of racing during their annual fun day at the Rubis Southside Race Day on Sunday.

For the first time the BKC will be running rental kart races for members of the public throughout the end-of-season event. Races will be held from noon until 4pm.

Five karts for adults and children aged 12 and under, as well as two karts for smaller children aged five years and up, will be available to hire at $30 for the first race and $20 thereafter.

Scott “Skitchy” Barnes, the BKC president, said the rentals were a great way for those interested to dip their toes into the sport.

“For the first time the rentals are going to be opened up to the public at a really cheap cost,” Barnes said.

“We have five rental karts and we’re going to be turning them over with five-to-ten minute races. They will be going all afternoon.

“Obviously the rentals aren’t as fast as the Tags or Shifters, but it’s a good way to get in the kart and see if you like it and see if it’s something you have an interest in doing.”

Barnes, who won the Shifters and 206 Seniors class last season, said the club will be also be hosting a two-hour endurance race, starting at 10am, for their seasoned drivers. Nine teams of three drivers have entered the race with each outfit stumping up $300 in prize money.

“It’s about who can do the most laps in two hours,” said Barnes, who has teamed up with Blake Horseman and Ryan Rebello.

“Each driver has to drive at least twice. There’s going to be a lot of money on the line.

“It’s going to be the survival of the fittest. Pit stops and strategies will come into play. It’s the first time we have done something like this and it should be real fun.”

On the final race day of the season on April 22, Nathan DeCosta completed a hat-trick of wins in the Cadet class, a feat repeated by Horseman in Tag Seniors.

In the L206 Masters, Travis Lewis prevented Jeff Sousa from a clean sweep, winning the second of the three races.

Barnes claimed a pair of wins in the L206 Seniors, with AJ Durham also earning a victory, while Jauza James won two of the three races in the Tag Juniors. Jorja Thomas won the other heat.

Ryan Lopes took a pair of chequered flags in the Shifters.
