Warwick father-of-four Robert Wilson has told The Royal Gazette of his shock at winning Father of the Year.

Mr Wilson emerged victorious from more than 100 entries in Gina Spence Productions’ third annual “We Love You Dad” contest.

Zerriko Wilson, his 17-year-old stepson, wrote a glowing tribute in his written entry to the competition, praising Mr Wilson for teaching him everything from self-awareness to how to fish.

Asked what he enjoyed about being a father, the Jamaican native answered: “Everything. Zerriko has been through a lot for a young boy, but he has finally settled.

“I’m glad to have been there to support him through all of it.”

They have known one another for 12 years, during which time Mr Wilson has seen Zerriko flourish into a valedictorian student.

The teenager is now in Toronto studying management production at Harris Institute, and he is hoping to have a career in the media after he graduates.

After Mr Wilson’s win, Gina Spence praised his humility.

“The letters were unbelievable,” she added.

“We hear so much about deadbeat dads, but we know there are many dads who go out every day and do the right thing by their children.

“Anyone can be a daddy, but it takes a real man to be a father.”
