Reprieve likely for motorbike under threat

We would be so happy: William DaCosta from the Ryderz motorcycle club(Photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Clemency is “likely” for a motorcycle that bike aficionados had feared might end up being scrapped for breaking horsepower limits.

If the regulation is changed, owners of the Honda CBR150 — who had feared their sporty wheels might have been scrapped — will possess a classic bike.

“If they do get reprieved, the club will be in praise; we’ll be so happy,” said William DaCosta of the Ryderz motorcycle club, which counts many proud owners of CBR150s among its ranks.

“It was a very popular bike, so if they’re allowed to stay it will become a classic.”

The Transport Control Department only recently spotted that the 2011 model of the bike had been upgraded, making it technically too powerful for the island’s roads. As a consequence, TCD was abruptly no longer able to pass the CBR150 for inspections. According to a spokesman, “measures have been taken to prohibit the continued importation of the motor bikes”.

“Meanwhile, officials are considering the next steps regarding those that have already been sold in Bermuda, but it is likely that they will be allowed to remain on the road.”
